Frequently Asked Questions
Water temperature is extremely important when mixing colostrum powder. If the water is too cold, the solution becomes more challenging to mix and feed and will not provide additional warmth for the calf. However, if the water temperature is too hot, the colostrum can be damaged, lowering the efficacy. We recommend mixing powder with water at 43-49°C / 110-120°F and feeding at the calf’s body temperature.. Never microwave colostrum as this also damages antibodies.
Feeding colostrum within the first 2 hours of life, and a second feeding of colostrum 8 hours later – if needed. If calves are slow to suckle, colostrum should be tube fed rather than allow more time to pass. Feeding additional amounts is recommended for stressed or high-risk calves. Consult your veterinarian.
To replace is to completely substitute maternal colostrum with a colostrum product.
To supplement is to feed a colostrum product in addition to available maternal colostrum.
- Colostrum powder should be stored at or below room temperature or in a fridge or freezer if the ambient storage temperature is expected to exceed 25oC / 77oF. Storing the powder refrigerated or frozen will not harm it in any way but it will take a bit more time to mix if it isn’t warmed a bit first.
- Do not store colostrum powder in areas with high humidity or where direct exposure to sunlight is possible.
- Replace lids on multi- dose containers (pails) or seal individual packages and bulk bags by rolling and clamping the top of the bag. Avoid exposure to moisture by sealing properly.
- Unused mixed colostrum can be stored refrigerated for up to 24 hours or frozen for up to one year.
- Double bag and freeze unused mixed colostrum flat using sealable bags. Thaw in warm water (35-40oC / 95-105oF) prior to feeding. Do not microwave or thaw in extremely hot water.
