Mixing and Feeding Instructions
Always follow the instructions on your product’s label for correct water volume and recommended dose. Our simple steps will help you feed your newborns quickly.
-
Add warm water (43 - 49°C / 110 - 120°F)
-
Add colostrum
-
Mix thoroughly
- Pour and feed
Mix and feed according to package directions. Feed the first dose as soon as possible, preferably within 2 hours of birth for maximum absorption of antibodies. If a calf is willing to suckle, colostrum can be fed by bottle. If calves are slow to suckle, colostrum should be tube fed rather than allow more time to pass.
Case uses include:
- When maternal colostrum is insufficient or absent
- When available maternal colostrum is of poor quality
- High environmental challenge situations including, heat stress or hypothermia risk, dystocia, being a first calf/lamb/kid of a heifer, ewe or doe, a twin or multiple birth.
- As a matter of convenience to feed colostrum to standardize neonatal care by enriching maternal colostrum
- Transition feeding Post Day 1
- As a therapy to support young animals through stressful events or diarrhea
Yes, SCCL products are free from major diseases such as Tuberculosis, Brucellosis, Enzootic Bovine Leukosis, Foot and Mouth Disease, and BSE. Colostrum is collected from healthy cows.
Additionally, the final powder is microbiologically tested after production and again after packaging for Salmonella, Enterobacter, and other pathogenic coliforms using regulator-approved laboratory methods.
We take maternal colostrum and make it better! Our products are made with whole bovine colostrum that has been heat-treated, standardized, stabilized and dried into convenient powder to use immediately when a calf needs it.
SCCL uses controlled heat treatment designed to preserve IgG and bioactive components while reducing pathogen risk. This ensures both safety and efficacy.
Most of SCCL’s bovine colostrum products are classified as Veterinary Biologics because they contain antibodies (IgG) that support immune function and help prevent failure of passive transfer in newborn animals. This designation means they are strictly regulated by the CFIA-CCVB and must meet proven standards for purity, potency, safety, and efficacy, ensuring consistent quality and performance.
Pails are ideal for operations that value convenience, storage efficiency, and frequent use. They help reduce packaging waste, allow for easy scooping and handling on-farm, and are often more practical for farms feeding multiple animals regularly. We typically recommend having enough colostrum on hand to cover about 10% of the herd, so in these situations, a pail can be a very practical option for maintaining adequate inventory.
In contrast, bags are often preferred for their pre-measured accuracy and portability. Both formats serve important roles depending on the farm’s needs—we simply aim to highlight the differences so producers can choose what works best for their operation.
Colostrum powder should be stored in a cool, dry place under 25°C (77° F) with the bag/pail tightly sealed. Proper storage helps maintain product quality and shelf life.
