How To Test Your Colostrum

[Music] I'm Chantelle Gosselin. The quality assurance lab manager at SCCL. I'm going to show you how to use an optical and a digital bricks refractometer first we're going to start with the optical refractometer this is what it looks like it's important to calibrate it prior to testing any samples so what we're going to do is we're going to wipe off the lens just make sure that it's clean you want to use a clean cloth or a soft tissue we'll add some clean water to the prism just a couple of drops close the cover you're going to look through the scope at a light source and you want it to read at zero if it's not at zero you'll want to use a tiny little screwdriver here and adjust the calibration screw this might have a cover on it uh so if it does just remove the cover and the screw will underneath once it's at zero you can wipe off the water and then you'll want to add your sample next shake the sample [Music] well add a couple of drops to the prism trying to not get any bubbles in the sample because that will affect refracting of the light through the sample then you're once again going to look through the lens and you will will read the number on the scale once you're done you're going to wash the prism off again and dry it now for the digital refractometer it looks like this you're going to press the start menu you're going to add some water to cover the prism and press the zero button once it reads three zeros that's your calibration you'll wipe off the prism add some sample once again avoiding Bubbles and then immediately press start to read the sample when you've got your sample result then you're going to clean off the prism and dry it and that's how you accurately get bricks readings on colostrum samples [Music]
